Look to the Book
A devotion written by Dr. J. Stuart Houston
Psalm 119:1-9

“Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed thereto according to Thy Word”  (Psalm 119:9)

I want to direct you to another wonderful book in the Word of God- the book of Psalms. I am confident that many are struggling with different issues and situations in life that have them perplexed and burdened. I want to challenge you this week to “Heed His Word” as you search for guidance and direction.
Several years ago, I preached a series of messages on the final words of Christ as He gave His life on the cross. Last words often are like an x-ray of the heart. They reveal what lies beneath. Of course, Christ’s last words were words of pardon, peace and provision. As I studied for that series of messages, I was fascinated to read some of history’s most influential people, and the words that lay on their dying lips.

One of my favorites were the last words of Sir Walter Scott. As he lay dying, Scott told his son-in-law to go to his vast library and “bring me the book.”  His son-in-law knew the magnitude of Scott’s library, so he questioned him, “Sir, what book?”  The reply of Sir Walter Scott was priceless: “Son, there is but one Book. Bring me The Book.”  The son-in-law, Lockhart, went to the old man’s library and brought him a copy of the Word of God.

Counsel from others is good if it is wise counsel. Encouragement from a trusted friend is needed day to day. But the wisdom, guidance, direction and encouragement that is to be found in “The Book”, is incomparable. Spend time this week in the Word of God. Search it. Try it. Prove it. It will provide you what no other source, person or counselor can give you- a personal word from Almighty God.

There’s just one Book,’cried the dying sage,
‘Read me the old, old story.’
And the winged words that can never age
Wafted him home to Glory.
There’s just one Book.

There’s just one Book for the tender years,
One Book alone for guiding
The little feet through the joys and fears,
The unknown days are hiding.
There’s just one Book.

There’s just one Book for the bridal hour,
One Book of love’s own coining;
It’s truths alone lend beauty and power,
To vows that lives are joining.
There’s just one Book.

There’s just one Book for life’s gladness,
One Book for the toilsome days,
One Book that can cure life’s madness,
One Book that can voice life’s praise.
There’s just one Book.

There’s just one Book for the dying,
One Book for the starting tears,
And one for the soul that is going home,
For the eternal measureless years.
There’s just one Book.
